"...originally a Robinsons house called the White Swan, as befits its origins, one of two ales on draught was Robinson's Unicorn....the second offering was highly regarded; in excellent condition and judged unscientifically as the best beer of the evening. The beers are ever changing......
This Club, the 2015 Stockport & South Manchester CAMRA Club of the Year, (and Regional Runners Up) is a real asset to the local community. Staffed by volunteers, it always seems to have something going on.......there are many regular events such as bingo, quizzes, darts, snooker, live acts as well as a TV room for sport. If your local to the area, £20 would buy you an annual membership".

Campaign For Real Ale - Opening Times Magazine December 2016

Welcome,
The Club has a long history and was first established around 1918 as a branch of "The COMRADES OF THE GREAT WAR" initially based in the large room of the Turnball Institute, Derby Hall (built 1906), Edward Street (now Beverly Road), with 50 members, then in 1920 a new Committee was formed and an ex-army wooden hut was purchased with the financial help of Colonel J. E. G. Groves, C.M.G, T.D. (5th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment), on land generously donated by Alan de Tatton Egerton, 3rd Baron Egerton (19 March 1845 – 9 September 1920), with enough space to provide a bowling green, Tennis Courts or what ever was decided by the members. It provided a place to meet, read and socialise for returning First World War veterans of the village of Ladybarn and surrounding areas. The hut was erected and painted over the Whitsuntide holiday with paint donated by one of the leading paint dealers in Manchester. It was fitted out with a billards table, Dart and Ring Boards, Chess, Draughts, Dominoes and Evening papers
In May 1921, a conference was held in London, which was attended by Officers of the Ladybarn Branch and over 1000 delegates from across the country. It was at this meeting that it was unanimously decided to amalgamate all the various Ex-Service and Officers organisations under the title of The British Legion. The Ladybarn Branch of "THE COMRADES OF THE GREAT WAR", which now numbered over 150, was one of the first to adopt the new Rules and Constitution, with membership fees set at 2/6 Entrance Fee and 2/6 per Quarter payable in advance and was opened to non ex-servicemen.
A Royal Charter was granted in 1925 and the British Legion became The Royal British Legion. Over the years Ladybarn's membership grew in size and following a fire that destroyed the original ex-army hut, a new building was built in 1958, and then extended further during the 1960's when the afore mentioned Turnball Institute was purchased from the executors of the will of Maurice Egerton, 4th and last Baron Egerton of Tatton.
In 2009 the Club left the RBL organisation and joined the WMCIU, and started to look for new premises which more suited the Club and its membership. The ideal location was found close by in 2012 on Green Street - the closed former Robinson's Brewery pub - The White Swan. The building underwent months of major remodeling and refurbishment, keeping many of the original Kay's Brewery 1920's features to accommodate the Social Club. The Club finally moved in and opened on 23rd August 2013.
The refurbishment saw the downstairs opened up into a large, comfortable lounge area, with the original 1920's bar being re-positioned and lovingly restored, and a new back bar created from reclaimed oak. A further refurbihment during Covid Lockdown saw the Club being completly redecorated inside and out as well as all new furniture being fitted including bench seating.
The bar is now stocked with quality beers from Heineken and other suppliers including Heineken, Cruzcampo & Fosters lagers, John Smiths & Tetleys Smooth bitter, Strongboe & Strongbow Dark Fruits as well as Beavertown Neck Oil and Camden Pale craft beers and top qulaity Guinness. There are always FOUR cask ales - Robinson's Unicorn in homage to the buildings origin, and three Guest Ales changing every few days - see the Our Cellar page for further details and here for Campaign For Real Ale listing. Also downstairs is a stage area and dance floor for the Club to host high quality Live Artists on Saturday nights. A pool table has also been provided.
Going up the original oak staircase, there are two newly restored and re-covered full sized snooker tables with state of the art lighting charged at 20p for 14 minutes. There is a courtyard garden area at the rear, with planters, chairs tables and a covered smokers area which was sadly lacking at the old building. See our Facebook page or our photo gallery for a series of photos taken before and during the refurbishment.
The Club has several pub sports teams:
Pool Team - play in the Phil Taylor Chorlton League on Monday Evenings
Pub Quiz Team - Ethel Rodin in the Withington Pub Quiz League on Wednesday nights.
Men's Snooker playing in the Levenshulme Snooker League on Thursday nights.
Two Ladies Darts Log End (Manchester Board) teams playing in the Stockport Log End League also on Thursday Nights.
The Club also shows Sky Sports & TNT Sports both in HD on its 4 large televisions and shows all major sporting events.
The Club continues to run as a Private Members Club, affiliated to the WMCIU, with new memberships being available from just £20 a year, which equates to just 28p a week. It is run by volunteer members for the Members and is a not for profit business. The Club is also home to 'Friends of Ladybarn' and 'Friends of Ladybarn Park' voluntary community groups aiming to improve the local area.
